Submitting graduate works to UMI Dissertation Publishing

Divided line

Two primary submission options are offered for our university publishing partners – online and paper submission. We also have programs for retrospective publishing and open access publishing of graduate works. Each is covered in one of the sections below:

Why your institution should use online submission

In 2003, UMI Dissertation Publishing introduced an online system for submission of dissertations and theses. More than 100 of our university publishing partners are currently using it, and dozens more are running pilot projects to test its use.

Online submission is easier, faster, and results in the highest quality version of the published graduate work. For example, it offers:

  • A shorter publishing process: on average, 2 to 4 weeks shorter than paper submissions
  • No printing or shipping requirement: all submission work occurs online, so no copies to print and no boxes to pack and ship
  • No paper forms to complete and mail: all forms can be completed online
  • Preservation of the graduate work as submitted: with the "born digital" version of a graduate work, we can capture all color images, graphs, etc., exactly as the author intended.
  • True accessibility for the vision-impaired: scanned images of paper submissions cannot be interpreted by screen readers; only PDFs created from the original electronic document are readable.

Ongoing support for paper submission

While we encourage all our university publishing partners to migrate to online submission, UMI Dissertation Publishing continues to support paper submission. Questions about paper submission can be directed to our Author and School Relations group.

The new Open Access publishing option

In scholarly publishing circles, interest in open access publishing continues to grow (content that a reader can access free of charge). To support open access in the world of dissertations and theses, UMI Dissertation Publishing has developed a new Open Access publishing option. Officially launched in the fall of 2006, we are in the process of building an online repository called PQDT Open to provide worldwide access to open access graduate works. Please contact us if you have any questions about our Open Access publishing option.

Our Digital Archiving and Access Program

The Digital Archiving and Access Program enables your institution to archive and preserve paper dissertations and theses from past years that you currently store in your library as vulnerable paper documents. All the advantages of publishing new dissertations and theses can also be conferred on this archive of scholarship and institutional history. For more information on how you can take advantage of this program, please contact us.
