What is Error 1004?
How do I fix Error 1004?
I tried to log in to ProQuest and I got a screen called Error 1004?
What happened?
What does this mean?
What should I do? (Library
Administrator Instructions)
What happened?
The following ProQuest error:"Error 1004: The ProQuest account you entered
is locked due to too many failed logon attempts." will display when you
attempt to log in to ProQuest with an account name and password logon, and the
account has been locked because there have been too many failed attempts to
access ProQuest via this account.
What does this mean?
If you are a student or library patron, this error should not alarm
you. Most often, this error occurs simply because the account password was
mistyped or misread and tried multiple times by either an individual or a
software program.
What should I do?
This error is brought about to protect your library's account from misuse or
abuse. Only an authorized representative of your library can have this account
unlocked by ProQuest. In order to unlock this account for access, you should
contact your library reference desk, your institutional help desk, or your
offsite support services for assistance.
Unfortunately, because this error indicates multiple failed attempts to access
this account, ProQuest Support can only provide support assistance to authorized
library representatives on this error and cannot provide authentication
assistance or information to end-users.
Library Administrator Instructions
If you are a Library Administrator, this error indicates that multiple
failed authentication attempt to ProQuest were made via this account name. In
all of these attempts, the account name was recognized, but the corresponding
password was not valid. This failure can be caused by a number of scenarios,
such as the following common ones:
- A user is attempting to access ProQuest via a username and password and
has an older password. This is the most common reason for this error. You
may wish to verify that any changes of password are communicated to the
whole library community.
- The library has a metasearch or federated search service which is
attempting to log in to ProQuest using and old or incorrect password.
Software can often attempt the same password repeatedly in a short period of
time; this can significantly shorten the time it takes to cross the threshold
of failed attempts.
- A user is attempting to access ProQuest via an automated or possibly
malicious method. If a library suspects this is the case, please contact
ProQuest as soon as possible so that Customer Support may assist in
addressing this problem.
If your patrons/students continue to encounter this problem, please contact
ProQuest
Technical Support to discuss alternate remote access options.
If none of the above scenarios or suggestions seems to apply, please contact
ProQuest Customer Service so that we may help you to resolve the problem.
